ततः पक्षि निनादेन वृक्ष भन्ग स्वनेन च |
बभूवुः त्रास सम्भ्रान्ताः सर्वे लन्का निवासिनः || ५-४२-१
At the screaming sound of birds and at the sound of the crash of falling trees, all the inhabitants of Lanka then became trembled with fear.
तब पक्षियों के कलरव और वृक्षों के टूटने की आवाज़ से लंका के सभी निवासी भयभीत और व्याकुल हो गए।
Sundara Kanda – Sarga 42 · v2
विद्रुताः च भय त्रस्ता विनेदुः मृग पक्षुणः |
रक्षसाम् च निमित्तानि क्रूराणि प्रतिपेदिरे || ५-४२-२
Made to run to-and-fro and getting frightened, beasts and birds began to scream. Atrocious omens made their appearance before the demons.
भयभीत और व्याकुल पशु-पक्षी राक्षसों के क्रूर निमित्तों को जानने लगे।
Then, the ugly-faced female-demons, whose sleep has vanished, found that grove demolished and saw that great heroic monkey.
जब वे राक्षस निद्रा से जागे, तो उन्होंने विकृत मुखों से उस वन को टूटा हुआ और उस महान वानर वीर को देखा।
Seeing those female-demons, the mighty armed Hanuma endowed with a great courage and might, assumed a gigantic form which created a terror to the female-demons.
वह महाबाहु, महासत्त्व और महाबलवान् (हनुमान्) उन्हें देखकर राक्षसों के लिए अत्यंत भयानक रूप धारण कर लिया।
Beholding that mighty monkey having a gigantic body similar to a mountain, the female-demons then asked Seetha (as follows):
तब उस विशालकाय, महाबली वानर को देखकर, राक्षसों ने जनक की पुत्री (सीता) से पूछा।

को अयम् कस्य कुतो वा अयम् किम् निमित्तम् इह आगतः |
कथम् त्वया सह अनेन सम्वादः कृत इति उत || ५-४२-६
"Who is he? Whose messenger is he? From where and for what purpose he has come here? Wherefore a conversation was held by him with you?"
यह कौन है, किसका है, कहाँ से आया है, किस कारण से यहाँ आया है, और इसने तुम्हारे साथ यह बातचीत कैसे की?
Sundara Kanda – Sarga 42 · v7
आचक्ष्व नो विशाल अक्षि मा भूत् ते सुभगे भयम् |
सम्वादम् असित अपान्गे त्वया किम् कृतवान् अयम् || ५-४२-७
"O large-eyed Seetha! Tell us. Let there be no fear for you, O fortunate lady! What did he speak to you? O lady having black outer eye-corners!"
हे सुंदरी, तुम्हारी विशाल आँखों में भय न हो। बताओ, इस काले नेत्रों वाले ने तुम्हारे साथ क्या किया है?

अथ अब्रवीत् तदा साध्वी सीता सर्व अन्ग शोभना |
रक्षसाम् काम रूपाणाम् विज्ञाने मम का गतिः || ५-४२-८
Thereupon Seetha the virtuous lady, having a complete beauty of all limbs, spoke as follows: "Where is the ability for me to know about the demons of a terrific form?"
तब सब अंगों से सुशोभित साध्वी सीता ने कहा, "काम रूप धारण करने वाले राक्षसों को जानने में मेरी क्या शक्ति है?"

यूयम् एव अस्य जानीत यो अयम् यत् वा करिष्यति |
अहिः एव अहेः पादान् विजानाति न संशयः || ५-४२-९
"You alone can recognise who he is and what he does. A serpent only can recognise the feet of another serpent. There is no doubt about it."
तुम ही इसके बारे में जानते हो कि यह क्या करेगा। साँप ही साँप के पैर जानता है, इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं है।
Sundara Kanda – Sarga 42 · v10
अहम् अपि अस्य भीता अस्मि न एनम् जानामि को अन्वयम् |
वेद्मि राक्षसम् एव एनम् काम रूपिणम् आगतम् || ५-४२-१०
"By seeing him, I too get frightened. I do not know who he is. I only know him as a demon, able to assume any form at his will, who arrived here."
मैं भी इससे डरता हूँ, मैं इसे नहीं जानता कि यह कौन है। मैं इसे एक कामरूप धारण करने वाले राक्षस के रूप में जानता हूँ जो आया है।
Hearing the words of Seetha some female-demons fled to different directions. Some stayed back. Some others went to Ravana to inform about the matter.
वैदेही (सीता) की बात सुनकर राक्षसी तुरंत भाग गईं। कुछ वहीं रुक गईं और कुछ रावण को बताने चली गईं।
After approaching Ravana, the female demons of ugly faces started to tell (as follows) of the monstrous and terrific monkey.
रावण के पास विकृत मुख वाले राक्षस थे, जो भयानक वानर का वर्णन करने के लिए उसके पास आए।
Sundara Kanda – Sarga 42 · v13
अशोक वनिका मध्ये राजन् भीम वपुः कपिः |
सीतया कृत सम्वादः तिष्ठति अमित विक्रमः || ५-४२-१३
"O king! A monkey having a terrific body and a boundless prowess, is stationed in the middle of Ashoka grove and made a conversation with Seetha."
वन में विशालकाय वानर, जिसका नाम हनुमान था, राजा की तरह खड़ा था। उसने सीता से बात की और वह असीम पराक्रमी था।
Sundara Kanda – Sarga 42 · v14
न च तम् जानकी सीता हरिम् हरिण लोचणा |
अस्माभिः बहुधा पृष्टा निवेदयितुम् इच्छति || ५-४२-१४
"Eventhough questioned in many ways by us, Seetha, the daughter of Janaka, having eyes similar to those of a doe, is not inclined to tell about the monkey."
यहाँ श्लोक का सरल हिंदी अनुवाद दिया गया है: जानकी सीता ने उस हरि (राम) को, जिनकी आँखें हिरण जैसी हैं, हम सबने बार-बार पूछा, पर वह बताना नहीं चाहते थे।
Sundara Kanda – Sarga 42 · v15
वासवस्य भवेत् दूतो दूतो वैश्रवणस्य वा |
प्रेषितो वा अपि रामेण सीता अन्वेषण कान्क्षया || ५-४२-१५
"He may be a messenger of Indra the Lord of celestials, or the messenger of Kubera the king of riches or even a messenger sent by Rama to search for Seetha."
यहाँ संस्कृत श्लोक का सरल हिंदी अनुवाद दिया गया है: वह इंद्र का दूत हो सकता है, या कुबेर का दूत हो सकता है। या फिर वह राम द्वारा सीता की खोज की इच्छा से भेजा गया हो।
"He, having a wonderful form, has wiped off your grove, attached to the gynaecium, which is fascinating and extending with many kinds of animal-flock."
उस तुम्हारे भूत रूप से, जो तुम्हारा मन मोहने वाला था, वह वन अनेक पशुओं से भरा हुआ और साफ किया हुआ था।
Sundara Kanda – Sarga 42 · v17
न तत्र कश्चित् उद्देशो यः तेन न विनाशितः |
यत्र सा जानकी सीता स तेन न विनाशितः || ५-४२-१७
"There is no place whatsoever in that grove, which was not destroyed by him. Only that place, where Seetha the daughter of Janaka was sitting, was not destroyed by him."
वह स्थान ऐसा कोई नहीं जिसे उसने नष्ट न किया हो। परंतु जहाँ जानकी सीता हैं, उसे उसने नष्ट नहीं किया।
Sundara Kanda – Sarga 42 · v18
जानकी रक्षण अर्थम् वा श्रमात् वा न उपलभ्यते |
अथवा कः श्रमः तस्य सा एव तेन अभिरक्षिता || ५-४२-१८
"It is not known whether to protect Seetha or because of fatigue, he has left that place undestroyed, or else, what fatigue is there for him? He has done it to protect Seetha."
सीता की रक्षा के लिए या किसी श्रम के कारण यह नहीं मिलता। या फिर उसका क्या श्रम, उसी ने तो उसकी रक्षा की है।
Sundara Kanda – Sarga 42 · v19
चारु पल्लव पत्र आढ्यम् यम् सीता स्वयम् आस्थिता |
प्रवृद्धः शिंशपा वृक्षः स च तेन अभिरक्षितः || ५-४२-१९
"That well-grown Simsupa tree, abounding in charming sprouts and flowers, under which Seetha herself took shelter, has been spared by him."
चारु पल्लव पत्र आढ्यम् यम् सीता स्वयम् आस्थिता |
प्रवृद्धः शिंशपा वृक्षः स च तेन अभिरक्षितः || ५-४२-१९
**सरल हिंदी अनुवाद:** जिस सुंदर पत्तों वाले शिंशपा वृक्ष पर स्वयं सीता विराजमान थीं, वह वृक्ष भी उसी के कारण सुरक्षित रहा।
To that terribly looking monkey by whom Seetha was spoken to and that grove destroyed you to order a terrible punishment.
उस भयंकर रूप वाले रावण को दंड देने के योग्य तुम ही हो, जिसने सीता का हरण किया और उस वन को नष्ट कर दिया।
Sundara Kanda – Sarga 42 · v21
मनः परिगृहीताम् ताम् तव रक्षो गण ईश्वर |
कः सीताम् अभिभाषेत यो न स्यात् त्यक्त जीवितः || ५-४२-२१
"O chief of the demons-troops! Who would dare to talk to that Seetha, who has been mentally accepted by you, except perhaps he who is ready to abandon his life?"
हे राक्षसों के स्वामी, आपके द्वारा पकड़ी गई सीता के बारे में कौन बात कर सकता है, जो जीवित रहने की इच्छा नहीं रखता हो?
Hearing the words of the female-demons, Ravana the lord of demons flared up like a funeral fire, his eyes spinning with anger.
राक्षसों की बातें सुनकर, राक्षसों का राजा रावण, जैसे आग भड़क उठी हो, क्रोध से उसकी आँखें लाल हो गईं।
Tears dropped from Ravana's enraged eyes, like drops of oil dripping from resplendent lamps.
क्रोधित होने पर उसकी आँखों से आँसू बहने लगे, जैसे क्रोध से भरी हुई उसकी आँखें जल रही हों।
Ravana, with a great splendour, sent demons with a valiance equal to him, called Kinkaras, in order to catch hold of Hanuma.
महातेजस्वी राजा ने हनुमान को वश में करने के लिए अपने जैसे ही शूरवीर राक्षसों को आज्ञा दी।
He ordered for eighty thousand of those Kinkaras who were strong. All those mighty Kinkaras with their large bellies, long tusks and terrible forms, longing to fight with iron mallets and clubs in hand, in eagerness to lay hold on Hanuma, started from that place.
उन बलवान, अस्सी हजार योद्धाओं के समूह, जिनके हाथों में गदा थी, उस भवन से निकले। वे बड़े पेट वाले, भयंकर दाँतों वाले, विकराल रूप वाले और अत्यंत बलवान थे, सभी युद्ध के लिए उद्यत और हनुमान को पकड़ने के लिए उत्सुक थे।
Approaching Hanuma who was standing near the arched doorway, they rushed towards him with a great speed, like locusts rushing towards a fire.
वे महावेग से उड़ते हुए, आग की ओर झपटते पतंगों की तरह, उस तोरण पर बैठे हुए वानर के पास जा पहुँचे।
They banged Hanuma with various kinds of maces, iron bludgeons plated with gold and arrows shining like the sun.
वे वानर श्रेष्ठ को विचित्र गदाओं, परिघों, सोने के बाजूबंदों और सूर्य के समान तीक्ष्ण बाणों से मारने लगे।

मुद्गरैः पट्टिसैः शूलैः प्रासतोमरशक्तिभिः |
परिवार्य हनूमन्तं सहसा तस्थुरग्रतः || ५-४२-२९
Quickly surrounding Hanuma with clubs, sharp edged spears, iron pikes, lances, javelins and swords, they stood in front of him.
हनुमान को गदा, भाले, शूल, प्रास और तोमर जैसे हथियारों से घेरकर वे अचानक उनके सामने आ खड़े हुए।

हनूमान् अपि तेजस्वी श्रीमान् पर्वत सम्निभः |
क्षिताव् आविध्य लान्गूलम् ननाद च महास्वनम् || ५-४२-३०
The highly splendorous and illustrious Hanuma too, looking like a mountain, hurled his tail on the ground, making a thunderous noise.
हनुमान जी तेजस्वी और श्रीमान थे, वे पर्वत के समान विशाल थे। उन्होंने पृथ्वी पर अपनी पूंछ जमाकर एक भयंकर गर्जना की।
Sundara Kanda – Sarga 42 · v30
स भूत्वा सुमहाकायो हनुमान् मारुतात्मजः |
धृष्टमास्फोटयामास लङ्काम् शब्देन पूरयन् || ५-४२-३१
The highly splendourous and illustrious Hanuma too, looking like a mountain, hurled his tail on the ground, making a thunderous noise.
हनुमान, जो वायुपुत्र हैं, विशालकाय होकर गर्जना करते हुए लंका को ध्वनि से भर रहे थे।
By that great sound made by Hanuma through clapping on his arms together with a resound, birds fell down from the sky. Hanuma also then cried aloud with a clamorous voice (as follows):
उस भयंकर गर्जना से, जो गूँजती हुई ऊँची उठी, आकाश से पक्षी गिर पड़े, और सब कुछ नीचे की ओर आ गया।
Sundara Kanda – Sarga 42 · v32
जयत्यतिबलो रामो लक्ष्मणश्च महाबलः |
राजा जयति सुग्रीवो राघवेणाभिपालितः || ५-४२-३३
"Long live the mighty Rama and the powerful Lakshmana! Long live the King Sugreeva, protected by Rama!"
अत्यधिक बलवान राम और महाबली लक्ष्मण की जय हो। राघव (राम) द्वारा रक्षित राजा सुग्रीव की भी जय हो।
"I am Hanuma, the destroyer of the army of adversaries and the son of wind-god. I am the servant of Rama, the king of Kosala Kingdom, who is unwearied in action."
मैं कोसलराज श्री राम का दास हूँ, जो बिना किसी प्रयास के महान कार्य करते हैं। मैं पवनपुत्र हनुमान हूँ, जो शत्रु की सेनाओं का संहार करने वाला हूँ।
Sundara Kanda – Sarga 42 · v34
न रावणसहस्रम् मे युद्धे प्रतिबलं भवेत् |
शिलाभिस्तु प्रहरतः पादपैश्च सहस्रशः || ५-४२-३५
"Even a thousand of Ravanas will not be matching equally with me, who is capable of striking with thousands of rocks and trees in battle."
रावण के हजार सिर भी युद्ध में मेरे बल के सामने टिक नहीं सकते, क्योंकि मैं पत्थरों और पेड़ों से उन पर हजारों बार प्रहार कर सकता हूँ।
Sundara Kanda – Sarga 42 · v35
अर्दयित्वा पुरीम् लङ्कामभिवाद्य च मैथिलीम् |
समृद्धार्थो गमिष्यामि मिषताम् सर्वरक्षसाम् || ५-४२-३६
"Here, before the eyes of all the demons, I will annihilate the City of Lanka and after offering salutation to Seetha, I will go back after fully completing my task."
लंका को जीतकर और सीता जी को प्रणाम करके, मैं सभी राक्षसों को देखते हुए धन की प्राप्ति के लिए जाऊंगा।
Sundara Kanda – Sarga 42 · v36
तस्य सन्नाद शब्देन ते अभवन् भय शन्किताः |
ददृशुः च हनूमन्तम् संध्या मेघम् इव उन्नतम् || ५-४२-३७
Those demons became frightened by the clamorous voice of Hanuma cried aloud and saw him to be as high as a twilight rain-cloud.
उसकी गर्जना सुनकर वे भयभीत हो गए। उन्होंने हनुमान को संध्या के घने बादल की तरह ऊँचा देखा।
Sundara Kanda – Sarga 42 · v37
स्वामि संदेश निह्शन्काः ततः ते राक्षसाः कपिम् |
चित्रैः प्रहरणैः भीमैः अभिपेतुः ततः ततः || ५-४२-३८
Not feeling apprehended because of the orders of their king, those demons thereafter rushed towards Hanuma, with their terrific and amazing weapons.
स्वामी के आदेश से निडर होकर, वे राक्षस वानर पर चारों ओर से भयानक और विचित्र हथियारों से टूट पड़े।
Sundara Kanda – Sarga 42 · v38
स तैः परिवृतः शूरैः सर्वतः स महाबलः |
आससाद आयसम् भीमम् परिघम् तोरण आश्रितम् || ५-४२-३९
Surrounded on all sides by those strong demons, that Hanuma endowed with a great strength seized a huge iron bar belonging to the arched gate.
वह महाबली शूरवीरों से चारों ओर से घिर गया और उसने तोरण के पास रखे हुए लोहे के भयानक गदा को पकड़ लिया।
Sundara Kanda – Sarga 42 · v39
स तम् परिघम् आदाय जघान रजनी चरान् |
स पन्नगम् इव आदाय स्फुरन्तम् विनता सुतः || ५-४२-४०
विचचार अम्बरे वीरः परिगृह्य च मारुतिः |
Taking that iron rod, Hanuma killed the demons. That violent Hanuma strolled in the sky, taking that iron rod in his hand, as Garuda the eagle would carrying a serpent in its claws.
हनुमान जी ने उस लोहे की गदा को लेकर रात में घूमने वाले राक्षसों को मारा। जैसे गरुड़ सर्प को पकड़कर उड़ता है, वैसे ही वीर हनुमान जी उस गदा को लेकर आकाश में विचरण करने लगे।
Sundara Kanda – Sarga 42 · v40
स हत्वा राक्षसान् वीरः किम्करान् मारुत आत्मजः || ५-४२-४१
युद्ध आकान्क्षी पुनः वीरः तोरणम् समुपस्थितः |
Killing the valiant demons called Kinkaras, that heroic Hanuma wishing to fight again, arrived at the archy gate way.
वह वीर पुत्र, जिसने राक्षसों और किंकराें को मारा था, युद्ध की इच्छा से फिर से तोरण के पास आ पहुँचा।
Some demons, who somehow escaped from that terror, went to Ravana and informed him that all the Kinkaras have been killed.
तब उन राक्षसों में से कुछ, जो उस भय से मुक्त हो गए थे, वहाँ उपस्थित थे। उन्होंने रावण को जाकर बताया कि उसके सभी सेवक मारे गए हैं।

स राक्षसानाम् निहतम् महाबलम् |
निशम्य राजा परिवृत्त लोचनः |
समादिदेश अप्रतिमम् पराक्रमे |
प्रहस्त पुत्रम् समरे सुदुर्जयम् || ५-४२-४३
Hearing of large army of demons having been killed, that Ravana with his eyes rolling rapidly (with anger), ordered Jambumali, son of Prahasta, who was unequal in prowess and admirably unconquerable in battle.
राक्षसों के उस महाबली को मरा हुआ सुनकर, राजा ने, जिनकी आँखें आश्चर्य से फैल गई थीं, युद्ध में जिसे जीतना अत्यंत कठिन था, उस अपने पराक्रमी पुत्र प्रहस्त को आदेश दिया।
